If you drink alcohol during pregnancy the alcohol penetrates the placenta and enters the fetal bloodstream. As the fetus continues to grow, it takes longer for its liver to break down alcohol, potentially exposing its organs and tissues to alcohol. As no safe level of alcohol consumption has been set during pregnancy, the best advice for pregnant women or for women planning to conceive is not to consume alcohol.

In the first three months of pregnancy, consuming large amounts of alcohol can damage the developing organs of the fetus and the nervous system. Continuous excessive consumption over the next six months can have additional effects such as growth retardation, which can lead to behavioral and physical problems when the child is born.

A good diet, good fluids, and no smoking or drinking alcohol during pregnancy provide a healthy environment for the unborn child.
